Kara Schommer is a Portland native who graduated from the University of Portland with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, as well as a Master’s degree in Education and a Reading Endorsement. Kara has been a credentialed educator since 2012 and has worked with students in kindergarten through eighth grade in both classroom and learning specialist roles. One of her greatest passions is teaching reading, which led her to pursue training and certification in the structured literacy approach, Orton-Gillingham, in 2018. Through her experience as both a classroom teacher and learning specialist, she has seen firsthand the tremendous growth students can make in reading through the multisensory approach of Orton-Gillingham.
In 2022, Kara began coursework with the Making Math Real Institute. Making Math Real is a multisensory, structured methodology that provides students with comprehensive knowledge of mathematical concepts. Using Making Math Real strategies and methods, Kara helps students strengthen their understanding of mathematical concepts while supporting working memory and executive functioning development.
Currently, Kara works full-time as a learning specialist in private practice, specializing in Orton-Gillingham and math intervention. She provides individualized instruction tailored to each student’s unique learning needs and collaborates closely with parents, teachers, and other specialists to ensure students receive comprehensive support.
In her free time, Kara enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Outside of work, her hobbies include running, exploring new coffee shops, music, traveling, home decorating, baking, and reading.
